JCA Jumpstart’s Shark Tank is back after a three-year hiatus!

The event, a favourite on the communal calendar, attracts 400 people each year and is run by JCA’s Jumpstart committee chaired by Marc Schwartz and Isabella Rich.  Capturing the imagination of young people looking to be inspired by ideas and concepts that would impact the local Jewish community and extend beyond, the event is also an opportunity to make a difference.

The competition was tough, with over 16 applications and only five spots available.  After an interview process and a review by the Jumpstart committee, the following organisations will be pitching at the event on Sunday, 27th November, taking place in the early evening at an Eastern Suburbs location:

  • Abrahams Tent’s mission is to support those in hospital and their loved ones by providing accommodation, meals, shabbos in a box, care packs, advocacy, chaplaincy, and rides to and from medical appointments.

  • Arula’s mission is to help women who have undergone mastectomies by creating customised and comfortable prostheses specifically made to fit their bodies.

  • Community Health Support’s mission is to empower our community with confidence in a first-aid emergency by offering free first-aid equipment assessments, recommendations, First Aid Readiness sessions, and event first-aid support.

  • JCombinator’s mission is to connect the Jewish community and scale up their collective networks throughout Australia’s start-up and technology ecosystem.

  • MedEarth is committed to saving lives and the environment by recovering usable medical equipment and supplies (otherwise destined for landfill) and redistributing them as humanitarian aid to developing countries, disadvantaged local communities and local wildlife organisations.

With a total amount of prize money totalling $60,000, the winner will take home $30K, followed by the 1st runner-up at $20K and then $10K for the 2nd runner-up. The audience on the night will also have a chance to vote for their favourite.

Adjudicating the pitches will be “Sharks” Andrew Banks, Peter Ivany AO, Zara Seidler and a mystery shark that will be revealed a week before the event.
