What a bumper month of sport it’s been with our Australian team excelling at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. A big mazeltov to everyone that participated – you have all done our country and community proud.
From our golfers who got the balling rolling (so to speak), bringing in our first six medals, to our Women’s Netball team finishing up the tally with gold as the games concluded. I also wish a personal mazeltov to our CEO Alain Hasson, whose mum Wendy Beron earned gold in the women’s Stableford tournament (in her first Maccabiah event).
Finishing third overall in the medal tally behind the USA and Israel, our athletes, the team managers and delegation heads have really set the bar high for the future. Congratulations to all.
While it’s not the Maccabiah Games, we have the annual City2Surf on the horizon and for the first time ever, JCA and Maccabi NSW are putting a communal team together. I hope if you haven’t already signed up you will consider joining us on Sunday 14th August – with walking groups and running groups already training for the event, the ruach (and fitness) is building.
I wish you all a good weekend – stay fit, keep moving and let’s continue to build community!
Ian Sandler
President
Maccabi Team Australia have continued the tradition of sportsmanship and teamwork, connecting with more than ten thousand Jewish athletes from over 80 countries competing in the 21st Maccabiah Games in Israel this year.
Below is the scoreboard of the countries that have been awarded medals for their achievements and victory in the 2022 Maccabiah Games.
When we talk about Barry, we know we are talking about someone with a true communal heart.
Barry began competing in Athletics at Maccabi when he was 12 years old and commenced volunteering when he was 25. He was one of its longest serving Board Members (Chairman/President for 15 years), receiving an Honorary Life Membership last year when he retired.
However, his work with Maccabi was not done, he was Head of Delegation for our team that attended the Maccabiah Games in Israel this July – a team that did Australia and our community proud.
Barry’s communal work is not limited to Maccabi. He has served as Appeal Chairman at JCA and is an Honorary Life Governor. He was also the NSW Chairman of AIJAC (Australia Israel Jewish Affairs Council) for 16 years. His ongoing commitment to fundraising for and serving our community is well known and respected.
Barry’s work in the community flows through to his family, with daughters Lauren and Emma both committed to various Jewish organisations. His son Darren is currently Chair of JCA’s Allocations Committee.
Always a gentleman, Barry is truly the epitome of a communal leader – sharing his knowledge with grace and leading with strength and kindness. Thank you Barry for always being there for us.
Our Maccabiah athletes and City to Surfers weren’t the only one’s working out this month.
The team at The Burger Centre made sure that despite the weather, our seniors were also kept moving and active.
With hydrocise classes to support the relief of arthritic pain and stiffness, osteoporosis and back pain, the water supports joints and encourages free movement, as well as providing support and resistance, which helps to build muscle strength. And for those clients who prefer to have their feet planted firmly on the ground, there are dance activities and fitness programs.
Not only do the team at Burger look after the physical health of their friends and clients, they also ensure that the mind is exercised with art and craft activities as well as games and guest speakers providing social connection and interaction. There really is something for everyone.
Burger Centre are located at their purpose built centre in King Street, Randwick as well as at Montefiore at Hunters Hill. For more information visit their website www.burgercentre.com.au or call 8345 9147
Burger Centre is a joint partnership between JewishCare and Montefiore.
"I love working for JCA because it feels like an extension of my family. Everyday when you go into the office your guaranteed a good laugh, endless nosh, warm and loving atmosphere and a team who are always willing to jump in and help each other no matter what. We may be a little bit loud and crazy but it makes it so much fun!"

This BYO (Build Your Own) Poke Bowl is the perfect idea to add a modern, creative and colourful spin to your usual Shabbat dinner. A BYO Poke station works great if you have a large extended family like I have or even for a casual night in with kids.
