Jewish Educators of Tomorrow

Welcome to the Jewish Educators of Tomorrow (JET) Program, an initiative designed to inspire and support the next generation of Jewish educators.

In 2022, the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies launched the JET Year 12 program, in collaboration with Jewish day schools, to expose senior students to the opportunities of classroom teaching through observations, reflection and a university open day.

In 2024, the Fellowship and Academy pathways were launched, rooted in the legacy of Joy Balkind z”l and her lifelong dedication to Jewish education and community. JET offers a unique pathway for aspiring teachers, young and old to make a lasting impact with the support of a cohort of likeminded educators and mentors.

About The Program
The JET Fellowship Program is made possible by the JCA Esther and Zorach Balkind Fund, established through the generous endowment of the late Joy Balkind z”l. Joy was a passionate community leader who contributed to numerous Jewish organisations, including WIZO, the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, and the Fund for Jewish Higher Education. Her vision continues to nurture Jewish education in New South Wales (NSW) and ACT.

The JET program builds on Joy’s vision to create opportunities for Jewish education and leadership by providing aspiring educators with access to mentorship, financial support, and professional development.

Jet Year 12

This pathway introduces high school students who have an interest in education and teaching as a career, to the benefits of teaching.

Participants will:

  • Explore the variety of pathways in Education that are available to them.
  • Observe classrooms and gain first-hand insights into teaching.
  • Engage in workshops and discussions with teaching staff at various universities.
  • Discover how they can make a difference as Jewish educators.

JET Fellowships

For those pursuing a NESA-approved education degree within NSW or ACT, this pathway offers:

  • University Tuition Support: funding for basic university fees (conditions apply).
  • Practicum Placement: hands-on experience in Jewish education institutions.
  • Mentorship: one-on-one guidance from an experienced teacher to build confidence and skills in teaching.
  • Networking: participation in the NSW Jewish Education Symposia and connections with a network of educators across all Jewish education institutions.

JET Mentors

Become a paid mentor for a JET Academy or JET Fellowship student. All successful teachers (with 5+ years of full-time classroom experience) engage in informal mentorship throughout their career, reviewing and refining their practice.

JET Academy

For those pursuing a NESA-approved education degree within NSW or ACT, the Academy mentorship pathway provides:

  • Mentorship: One-on-one guidance from an experienced teacher to build confidence and skills in teaching.
  • Networking: Participation in the NSW Jewish Education Symposia and connections with a network of educators across all Jewish education institutions.
  • Professional Development: Regular education workshops run by professionals designed to address areas of personal interest to your JET Academy cohort.

Eligibility

  • JET Fellowships: Open to residents of NSW or ACT enrolled in any NESA-approved education degree. Applicants must be actively involved in Jewish community service and committed to teaching in Jewish education institutions.
