Darren Isenberg
Shelana Silver, J-Jobs Disability Employment Manager and Mother
Four years ago, Shelana's life changed when her son Adam began to experience mental health challenges. So began an uncertain journey to access support, advice and treatment. Today, Adam is diagnosed with schizophrenia and has become an advocate against the stigma and misunderstanding that can surround mental health. Shelana shares her journey as a carer and discusses what the available support was when she and Adam needed it most.
'Who will care for me when I need it?'
Over 2 in 5 Australians aged 16-85 are estimated to have experienced a mental disorder at some time.
In 2023, more than 400,000 people are living with all forms of dementia – more than 1.5m people in Australia are involved in caring for them.
Many think of a crisis as a sudden unexpected disaster such as a car accident or a natural incident such as a flood or fire. However, life crises can take many forms, and when faced with one, the immediate question can be, 'Who will care for me now?'
